The Kardashian’s new show debuts on Hulu on April 14.
This is not a paid advertisement, I just think it’s important to context.
Even if they hadn’t released the trailer for the show, I’d know a project is coming because of these announcements about nothing:
Youngest sister Kylie Jenner has a new baby, whose name isn’t Wolf, apparently, even though that’s what she originally announced. …But I’m sure we’ll learn what to call him on their new Hulu show.
Oldest sister Kourtney is engaged after a much-photographed romance with Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, yielding a new haircut, sense of style, and general disposition. The 90s are back. And so are the Kardashians, on their new Hulu show..
Recently divorced Kanye and Kim are fighting in public – a lot. Much has been made about whether or not Kanye’s erratic Instagram behavior toward his ex and her new love interest Pete Davidson qualifies as abuse, or if Kim is knowingly taunting Kanye by flaunting her relationship with Pete like a red cape in front of a charging bull is authentic. My take is that this is America, where we don’t have to choose between our favorite trashy trending topics, and multiple things can be true at once.
Much of what we see from the Kardashian Jenner clan is part of careful choreography with the media. These are people who are known to call the paparazzi for “candid” shots of them doing otherwise ordinary things to keep them in the news cycle. Momager and expert-level pot stirrer Kris Jenner is known to be close with tv folks who have a platform. If nothing’s an accident, then everything’s a choice, including the timing of Pete’s leaked texts to Kanye, fresh off a week of bad press and internet dragging when Kim offered “the best advice for women in business: Get your f*cking ass up and work.”
What’s most interesting about that clip, shot as part of a interview with Variety in preparation for The Kardashian’s new show (coming really soon, in case you forgot!) is that Kim’s veil slips ever so slightly to reveal a mean girl contempt she’s been otherwise pretty good at hiding since the Jordyn Woods drama.
What we know about the key players of this new lover’s quarrel is that all three parties involved love and need fame, they have a history of courting the media and using their relationships to elevate their profile. (Yes, even Pete.) If Janet Jackson can be married for 10 years and no one knew until she announced a divorce, then there’s no reason I should know that North couldn’t go to Sunday Service because she had a test to study for. I shouldn’t know that Kanye picked North from Kim’s house to go to school last week. Making this kind of infighting available to the public doesn't happen with people who value privacy.
But in Kanye, the Kardashians have a worthy adversary and chaos makes for good TV as it has in years (read: television seasons) past. Unlike Jordyn, or Kris Humphries, Amber Rose, Lamar Odom or Scott Disick, on whom the Kardashian machine has punched down and controlled the narrative, Kanye remains the only opponent they’ve ever had who is as famous and as monied as they are. Kanye has had a longer and more intimate relationship with the public because of his music, versus the Kardashian family whose celebrity is based on a very curated reality TV and social media presence. Because of his resources, they cannot dominate or steamroll Kanye. He’s got his own megaphone. Kanye is Kanye – that’s why Kim married him.
What we have here is the end result of a lot of choices and trade offs. A real-time look at what people are willing to do to find fame, keep fame and extend it. If your life is a commodity, and it certainly is for the Kardashian Jenners, then everything and anything is up for sale. So is Kanye right to be concerned about North’s foray into Tik Tok, to have suspicion that North is being groomed into the Kardashian family business of fame at seemingly all costs? I’d say so, knowing who he married.
But also, because he knew who he married, I have trouble feeling sorry for any of them, except the kids. Some say Kanye married Kim because he wanted a trophy that he could mold into his likeness, the some way some say he had with Amber. And critics say Kim wanted long-denied cache, and who better than Kanye to help her get it? Both of them got what they wanted. And yes, Kanye has gone too far, but no farther than the Kardashian family has gone to bully those they’re ready to dispose of – Kim goes full mean-girl again on the Hulu trailer; “We have all the time and all of the resources to burn them all to the fucking ground,” she says in a unintentionally revealing one-liner.
How long can they keep we all keep us with this Khaos?
